We’ve already shown you a glimpse of the new Mazda 6 and now recent spy photos give us an even better idea of what to expect. Dynamically the next generation Mazda 6 should impress given that it is based on the critically acclaimed CD 3-2 Ford Mondeo platform, a platform that will also underpin the Jaguar X-Type replacement as well as the new Volvo S60.

This will result in the new Mazda 6 being significantly larger than the current model, more of an upper mid-size passenger car. From what we can see in the photos there is plenty of promise that the new 6 will be sharp and stylish. Mazda already have a good looking range of vehicles so an ugly ducking is not expected.

The interior is believed to carry over styling elements from the RX8 sports car, including chrome ringed instruments and a similar theme to the centre console.

The twin exhausts seen in the picture indicate that this is most likely the V6 variant that most industry watchers are reporting will use Ford’s new 3.5-litre Duratec “Cyclone” engine, the same engine that will be powering Falcon from 2010. However, it wouldn’t surprise us if Mazda opted for the smaller 3.0-litre Duratec V6 for Australian delivered cars.

Other engine options include a 2.5-litre four-cylinder as well as a hybrid version that will borrow heavily from the 2008 Ford Fusion and its 2.5-litre hybrid powerplant. AWD is expected to be available as on option on all Mazda 6 models.

A 3.5-litre V6, AWD Mazda 6 would really be something special…and would be the logical basis for the next 6 MPS.

Asian production is expected to commence towards the end of this year, so we should expect to see the new model during the first half of 2008.
